“Divided We Fall” / dir. Jan Hřebejk / feature film / 2000 / 120 min. / Czech Republic
The final years of World War II. A small town in the Czech Republic occupied by the Nazis. One day, Josef and Maria Čížek, a childless couple, find a young Jewish escapee from a concentration camp and provide him with shelter. This black comedy, full of unexpected twists, is based on true events. The film portrays heroes who evoke sympathy, decent people and traitors, and explores the desire for life and apathetic passivity. Heroism and collaboration, generosity and cowardice intertwine, complicating if not preventing judgment.
